Today is Martin Luther King Day.

Dr. King’s birthday is January 15th. The United States made Dr. King’s birthday a federal holiday to honor his legacy, the third Monday of January every year.

Dr. King was assassinated on April 4th, 1968 by James Earl Ray. He would’ve been 92 years old.

Dr. King was a civil rights hero known for organizing the first major protest of the civil rights movement in 1955, the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

The historic March on Washington, where 250,000 people gathered to protest jobs and freedom, is where Dr. King delivered his iconic “I have a dream” speech.

New Music

New Music dropped this Friday as usual.

Aaliyah’s 42nd birthday was on Saturday. The iconic singer tragically died on August 25th, 2001 from an airplane crash.

Throughout the weekend on social media, fans shared their favorite Aaliyah moments and songs. “At Your Best” is one of my favorite Aaliyah songs.

Staying with the R&B vibes, Jazmine Sullivan dropped a new EP called Heaux Tales featuring Ari Lennox, H.E.R, and Anderson Paak.

Sullivan has dropped a few singles like Insecure ft. Bryson Tiller in the last year but this is her first “collection of songs” since 2015. She’s made it clear this is not an album. After listening, I love it. Girl Like Me ft. H.E.R is my favorite song on the EP so far.

In case you missed it, Tink dropped a new album called “A Gift And A Curse” on Christmas Day.

More R&B from dvsn, a new album called “Amusing Her Feelings” featuring PartyNextDoor, Miguel, Future, and others.

Juice Wrld and Young Thug dropped a record called “Bad Boy.” Juice Wrld accidentally overdosed on December 8th, 2019.

New music Friday’s have been a little slow since the start of the pandemic. Hopefully, more music will drop as the year unfolds.

Preparing for Inauguration

Anticipating protesting and violence following the Capitol building attack, Airbnb canceled all reservations in D.C for inauguration week. Federal and local law enforcement have advised people not to travel to D.C.

The inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden is set to take place on Wednesday, January 20th.

Across the country, law enforcement has taken measures to secure state Capitol buildings in anticipation of protests and riots following the Capitol attack on January 6th.

Battleground states that played a key part in Biden’s victory are on high alert.

The National Guard will also be present in at least 10 states, in addition to their existing presence in D.C.

Global researchers arrive in China

As COVID-19 continues to be a worldwide issue, a team of global researchers arrived in China on January 7th to track the origin of the virus.

Fifteen experts from the United States, Australia, Germany, Japan, Britain, Russia, the Netherlands, Qatar, and Vietnam arrived in Wuhan, the city where the virus was first detected, to

“conduct a politically sensitive investigation into its origins amid uncertainty about whether Beijing might try to prevent embarrassing discoveries”

This team was approved by President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government after months of diplomatic disputes. China refused international attempts for an inquiry after the Trump administration blamed them for their handling of the virus, even naming it the “China virus.”

When Australia called for an independent inquiry, China blocked imports on their wine, beef, and other goods.

The situation got so intense leading the head of WHO to file an unusual complaint.

It is unclear whether they will share their results with the Chinese.

72 Australian Open Tennis Players Quarantined

72 Australian tennis players are quarantining after passengers tested positive during separate flights from Los Angeles, Abu Dhabi, and Doha, Qatar.

25 of those players are quarantining after a flight from Doha, Qatar to Melbourne where a passenger tested negative initially before boarding.

The Austrian Open was set to start this month but has been rescheduled for February due to COVID-19 concerts.

New IRS Opening Date

IRS Announced that Filing Season will Open on Friday, February 12th, they will start accepting paper and electronic tax returns on that day.

There are two usual things about this. The opening date falls on a Friday and it’s two weeks later than usual.

Due to new legislation passed in Congress recently, this delay gives the IRS time to test their new system.

This will have no effect on the tax return deadline of April 15, 2021.

Despite the new changes, the IRS still expects to get 9 out of 10 tax refunds issued within 21 days.

Breaking News

UK Travel Restrictions

Starting today in the UK until atleast February 15th, incoming travelers must provide a negative COVID-19 test before entering the country.

Afterward, unless proof of a negative COVID-19 test is provided within 5 days, travelers must undergo quarantine for at least 10 days.

These new travel restrictions were announced as a new variant of COVID-19 has caused a surge in cases globally, specifically across the UK and in the United States. The strain is believed to be more easily transmissible.

The UK has already banned travelers from South Africa and Brazil after a new variant of COVID-19 was detected in Brazil.

UK Vaccine Immunization

The UK has been leading the world in COVID-19 vaccine immunization, being the first to administer Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine jabs.

According to BBC News, 140 people a minute are being jabbed, with their first dose of the vaccine usually. 3.5 million people have already received the first dose of the vaccine, according to CNN.

The Pfizer BioNTech and AstraZeneca are the two vaccines that are currently approved for emergency used, are being administered across the UK at vaccination sites.

NHS staff and front life workers are under extreme pressure at vaccination sites and hospitals as COVID-19 numbers continue to surge across some parts of the UK.

U.S Travel Restrictions

The CDC made a similar announcement to the UK last week. In addition to international travelers, citizens returning back to the U.S must provide a negative COVID-19 test before entering the U.S.

Starting January 26th, travelers must provide a negative COVID-19 test from no more than 72 hours before departure, to the airline in paper or electronic form.

The United States leads the world with more than 23.5 million coronavirus cases. 392,000 people have died since February 2020 when the first death was reported.

California and Texas have more than one million coronavirus cases alone.

COVID-19 in L.A County

This weekend, L.A county became the first county to reach 1 million COVID-19 cases.

No More COVID-19 Doses?!

Earlier this week, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced the federal government would release COVID doses that were initially supposed to be reserved for the next round of jabs.

The delivery of these doses would be a relief to states who are working with a limited amount, but as it turns out no such supply exists, according to the Washington Post.

Governor of Oregon Kate Brown's tweets on Saturday seemed to back up these reports.

FBI Investigation

The FBI is currently investigating a claim, that a woman who breached the Capitol building stole a hard drive or a laptop from Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office with the intent to sell it to Russia, according to an affidavit in a criminal case into Riley June Williams.

The affidavit also included a statement from a witness who reportedly saw a video of Williams

“taking a laptop computer or hard drive from Speaker Pelosi’s office."

The witness went on to say, Williams

" intended to send the computer device to a friend in Russia, who then planned to sell the device to SVR, Russia’s foreign intelligence service..”

The witness was not specifically identified as the claim remains under investigation.

It is not clear whether Williams has been apprehended. Following her actions at the Capitol, she is facing charges of entering a restricted building and disorderly conduct.
