Happy Father’s Day!
Today is Father’s Day! A day geared towards honoring fatherhood and parental bonds.
Father’s Day is a fairly new concept in America. The holiday was celebrated for the first time in 1910, but it became a national holiday in 1972 when Richard Nixon signed it into law. In America, Father’s day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. America is not the only country who celebrates this day. The concept of Father’s Day is celebrated on various different days across the world, usually in May, June or July, but it always holds the same meaning.
What does Father’s Day mean to you?
As I think about Father’s day and it’s meaning to me, it brings me to the beginning of my walk of faith and the role that my father played.
Start your children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will never return from it.
My parents always stressed the importance of spirituality and religion. Early on, my foundation was set. Throughout my schooling, I only attended private academies, until high school.
Going to private academics, mostly Christian schools, which emphasized the importance of starting your children on the right path early on, made me who I am today. Daily bible readings, weekly Chapel services, church sermons, and daily devotions, were the key to setting my foundation and relationship with God. I owe all the thanks to my parents who made it their priority to make sure a strong foundation was set for me. The foundation my parents set is the reason, I am who I am today, with the morals, beliefs and values that I have.
Holidays always hold a different meaning to every individual. For some holidays are important. While others find holidays to be completely insignificant. While today maybe a day of celebration, to offer endearment to the men in your life, this day may hold a different meaning to somebody else. Think about all of those who have lost their father or father figure. For them today holds a different meaning. Today is a reminder of what they don’t have. As we honor Father’s Day today, don't forget what this day may mean to those around you. Show them love.
If you are fortunate enough to be able to celebrate Father’s Day today, cherish this time with your father, father figure or loved ones. Use this time to strengthen family bonds. Get to know one another. Check in with each other.
Food for Thought
I have talked alot about recent world events and the impact on us. As I celebrate Father’s day today and remember all of those who have lost their father, I think about America's founding fathers. The foundation America’s founding fathers created early on, have led us to this current state of America.
As a man living in America, a black man specifically, take the time to ask them what this day means to them because of current events. Recent events may have taken a toll on their mind or mental health. Use this day, as you should everyday, to uplift one another and to spread peace, love and positivity.
What kind of foundation are you setting for yourself? How has the foundation set for you early on impacted you today?
"A strong foundation is important."
